We’re celebrating two of the BEST at SHMS! 💙🐻

Mr. Withers and Ms. Moore do so much behind the scenes to keep our school running smoothly, and they show up for our students and staff every single day. From supporting teachers to helping students through challenges, they are always there when it matters most.

Mr. Withers brings a calm, steady presence and is always ready to help however he can. He truly cares about our students and their success.

Ms. Moore works tirelessly to keep our school positive, organized, and welcoming. She pours so much into our school community, and it shows.

SHMS is better because of both of you. We appreciate you more than you know—thank you for everything you do for our Bears! 💙👏

Important ATLAS Testing Information from Mr. Hudgeons

Dear SHMS Families,

As ATLAS testing begins, we want to thank you for your continued support in helping our students be successful. To celebrate their hard work, students who show growth in any testing area or earn a Level 3 or Level 4 score will receive an excused absence reward.

You can help your child do their best by making sure they:

  • Get plenty of rest each night

  • Arrive at school on time

  • Bring their Chromebook fully charged each day

We are proud of the effort our students have put in this year and are excited for them to show what they know. Thank you for partnering with us as we encourage and celebrate student growth. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Sincerely,

Mike Hudgeons

🌡️ Help Us Keep Students Healthy! 🤧
As we head into Spring Break, please review these guidelines on when to keep your child home from school.

According to the latest Viral Respiratory Diseases Report from the Arkansas Department of Health, public schools saw an average absenteeism rate of 8.2% last week. Following these guidelines helps keep our classrooms healthy and learning strong.

Informational poster from PCSSD titled “When Should I Keep My Child Home from School?” Lists symptoms and conditions that warrant keeping a child home, including fever, vomiting, persistent cough, sore throat, rash, pink eye, and contagious illnesses like flu or COVID-19. Also outlines criteria for returning to school, such as being symptom-free for 24 hours and feeling well enough to participate. Includes a reminder to notify the school of any contagious diagnoses and references page 52 of the PCSSD Student Handbook for more details. Poster features bold headings, icons, and a clean layout for clarity.

🎓 AVID Wednesday Spotlight: WICOR in Action! ✏️📚

The foundation of AVID techniques is the WICOR framework — Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading — and it was on full display at Sylvan Hills High School.

In Mrs. Bridges’ history class, students explored industrialization and its impact on countries worldwide. After reading about the topic in class, they dug deeper through research, organized their findings into visual models, collaborated on large‑scale posters, and used inquiry to understand how global events shaped the modern world.

👕 Don’t forget to wear your college or career shirt tomorrow and celebrate the strategies that help our scholars think critically and dream big.

Our SHMS AVID sixth graders spent time working with Cato fifth graders to help them get prepared for the upcoming ATLAS testing in April. They shared strategies, encouraged the younger students, and helped them feel more confident about what to expect. It was great to see our students stepping into leadership roles and showing what AVID is all about—supporting others, building confidence, and using the skills we practice every day. ATLAS is coming up in April, and our students are working hard and getting ready to do their best. We’re proud of the leadership our sixth graders showed today! #BearsAreBest #AVID #FutureBears #SHMSPride #BearSuccess #StudentLeaders #ATLASReady #AVIDStrong #BearNation #FutureSHMSBears 💙🐻📚

Today we’re celebrating one of the absolute best! Mr. Withers keeps SHMS running strong every single day. Whether he’s helping students, supporting teachers, or jumping in wherever he’s needed, he does it all with a positive attitude and a big heart for our school.

He shows up for our kids, encourages our staff, and helps make SHMS a place where people feel supported and cared for. We’re lucky to have a leader who works so hard behind the scenes and still finds time to connect with everyone around him.

We hope today is full of great food, lots of laughs, and plenty of appreciation — because you deserve it!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Withers! 💙🐻

Love,

Your SHMS Family
